Checkups & Cleanings

Checkups and cleanings enable our team to gain an understanding of your dental health while having the opportunity to catch potential problems at their earliest stages. These appointments are also when one of our hygienists will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums, specifically targeting those areas in your mouth that you can’t clean at home. These treatments are just the first step to coming up with each patient’s individualized treatment plan, plus they dramatically reduce someone’s chances of developing tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.

Periodontal Therapy

When it comes to your oral health, the condition of your gums is just as important as your teeth! Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a very common bacterial infection that can cause red, swollen, and bleeding gums, and it can eventually lead to tooth loss! If we see any signs of infection during your checkup, we’ll quickly handle the problem using a special cleaning designed just for the gums called scaling and root planing.

Children’s Dentistry

Dr. Staten and the rest of our team just love getting to know entire families in our community, so we’re more than happy to treat their littlest smiles! We have the fun and relaxed atmosphere that children love as well as the specific treatments that they need. From their first appointment, we’ll go out of our way to help your child feel comfortable, and we’ll also work to instill healthy homecare habits to make your job between dental visits a little easier!

Dental Sealants

Applied directly to the teeth as a liquid, dental sealants quickly harden into a clear, protective shell that shields the teeth from cavity causing plaque, bacteria, and acids. We primarily place them on children’s back teeth, as they are very susceptible to cavities, but they are also extremely helpful for adults who are prone to decay. Once on the teeth, they can be trusted to provide round-the-clock cavity protection for about 10 years.

Nightguards for Bruxism

It’s estimated that around 1 in 3 people in the U.S. suffer from bruxism, which is a condition where a person clenches their jaw and grinds their teeth while they sleep. If we spot the signs of bruxism during a patient’s appointment (worn down teeth, a sore jaw), we’ll recommend that they wear a nightguard to bed. This is a small, custom-made mouthguard that comfortably fits over the teeth to provide a protective barrier against grinding.

Mouthguards & Sportsguards

Do you have a little athlete at home, or have you been known to hit the field, mat, or court from time to time? In any case, Dr. Staten can provide you and everyone else with their own custom-made mouthguard to keep their teeth protected while they go for sporting glory. His mouthguards are more comfortable than anything you can buy in the store, plus they are thicker and more durable as well, helping athletes keep their mind on the game and their smile in one piece.

Oral Cancer Screening

Because Dr. Staten is always looking out for his patients, he performs a complete oral cancer screening as part of every routine checkup. Early detection is the key to successfully treating the disease, so he recommends that all adults undergo at least one screening per year. If he finds anything that causes concern, he can help a patient quickly get follow-up treatment. The screening only takes a few minutes, but it could literally be the few minutes that saves your life.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral found in many foods, toothpastes, and public water sources because its long been shown to help strengthen the teeth against decay and cavities, so you’ll of course find it at Old School Dental as well! As part of every regular checkup, we include a topical fluoride treatment to give everyone a bit of extra cavity protection. It’s effective for patients of all ages, quick, painless, and it’ll keep everyone healthy from year to year.
